About Japanese Tablewares

Tableware includes the dishes, sauce boats, glassware, and cutlery (knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks and so on)  used to set a table for eating a meal. The nature, variety, and number of objects varies from culture to culture, and may vary from meal to meal.


It has been part of Japanese life and culture for centuries to use fine glassware, ceramics and lacquerware. Furthermore, different tableware are used for each season in Japan.




Spring- floral designs tableware, light colour

Summer - glassware are used because they give a 'cooling' impression

Autumn - darker colour tableware especially brown

Winter - claypots, thicker tableware because of cold weather
